My name is Tina Mataya, a Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and the founder of Tina’s Healthy Living. I started Tina’s Healthy Living out of a desire to help and encourage others to live healthier lives. Having regained my own health, I feel very fortunate to be able to help others regain theirs. Let me tell you my story:
I have struggled with my weight all my life and was an overweight child as far back as I can remember. My family has always fought with weight issues as well and we ate a lot of processed foods. Looking back now, I can see how that contributed to my weight issues, but we didn’t know any better then. I can remember going to my first Weight Watcher’s meeting in the 4th grade! Whenever I would see a doctor, they would invariably write “obese” on my charts, which is not a pleasant thing for a young girl. I battled my highest weight all through middle school. In high school I tried to control my weight by drinking Diet Pepsi, eating microwaved weight watcher meals and counting calories but it really didn’t help me. In fact, it made things worse by increasing my blood sugar and creating havoc with my digestive and immune systems – but I didn’t learn that until many years later.
In my early 20’s, I was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease. Again, because we didn’t know better we followed the treatment prescribed by the doctor, which included radiation and total removal of my thyroid. If only I knew then what I know now I would never have let that happen. So, now I live with managing having no thyroid and autoimmune disease.
I have spent many years since then studying and researching on my own how to best manage my weight, feel better and be healthy. Unfortunately, that led me down a really long road of not-so-good-for-me diets and detoxes. I literally have bookshelves overflowing with books on all kinds of diets and programs. I finally learned the healing power of real food and of seeking balance in all areas of my life. As I became more balanced I had a desire to share and help others learn to be healthy as well. To this day, I still continue to learn and strive to be the best I can be every day. My education to become a Nutritional Therapist helped me to understand that weight is a symptom of imbalance in our life and now I seek to find what is out of balance rather than the next quick fix “diet”. I’m a big fan of eating lots of fresh organic vegetables, clean proteins and healthy fats. As a bio-individual, my diet isn’t the same as everyone else’s but I do believe that “Paleo”, Western A. Price Foundation, and Nutritional Balancing have been big influences in helping me figure it out.
Often we wonder why we go through things – the “why me?” factor. Why couldn’t I be skinny and have no health problems? But as we come through difficult experiences we can then in turn help others because our own challenges give us empathy for those who struggle with the same issues. I am constantly learning more and more and want to continue my education by learning more about “a whole system healing approach” and “preventive maintenance” to use in my Nutritional Therapy practice. I find that this is a fascinating way of managing our health and I can’t seem to learn enough about it! I want to continue my education so that I can learn more and more ways to help others.
I have a fabulous husband named Charlie. We met in 2000, surely a divine appointment. We share a common love for horses, whole natural food, and healthy country living. We also enjoy growing our own garden. Our dog, Joey loves the garden too, especially when the vegetables are ripe. Charlie and I are committed to living this journey of life “healthy” together! We stay very conscious of what we’re putting into our bodies and the kind of life we lead.
I’m excited to have learned all that I have so far and look forward to working with clients to overcome their health challenges. Everyone is on a healing journey in some way and it is always nice to have someone alongside you on the journey. I would love to be that person for you. I will be an ally that walks with you and keeps you on the right path. Even I need to continue to seek help and to continuing learning how to stay on my healthy path. My hope is that our journey together will lead you to a healthier, balanced life.
As I’ve mentioned before, when I was growing up we did a lot of things because we didn’t know any better. I have since learned that when we know better we do better. Let me help you “know” better by identifying imbalances in your body, teaching you more about your unique bio-individuality and how to incorporate properly prepared, whole nutrient-dense foods into your life.
Today, I can thankfully say that I am happy, healthier and have maintained a healthy weight for a number of years. Although it has been a long road, I am grateful for my journey because it is due to my own experiences that I can truly understand yours. I know how my journey has turned out, so I know how yours can turn out, too.
